Mary Wright (Bath, Ohio): Cocker Spaniel Lady
Photocollage, circa 1950 (Albumen carte de visite circa 1860 by Henry Lock with added halftone and ink)

Mary Wright was a breeder of Boston Bull Terriers, but she had another keen interest as well: photocollage. In the 1940s and 1950s, she gathered old photographs and carefully covered the heads of the people pictured with halftones of dog's heads. Because they are halftones, we can safely presume they were cut from magazines or dog show programs. Wright's collages are highly exacting; the heads not only match the figures in scale and position, they even seem to have appropriate expressions.
